Resolution In Opposition of Prop 2 – 2026

WHEREAS,

The State of Alaska adopted an open primary system and ranked-choice general elections through a 2020 ballot measure; and

WHEREAS,

Initiative 24ESEG, titled “An Act Restoring Political Party Primaries and Single-Choice General Elections and Repealing Recent Campaign Finance Laws,” would eliminate open primaries, eliminate ranked-choice general elections, restore closed partisan primaries, restore single-choice general elections, and repeal certain campaign finance provisions adopted in 2020 ; and

WHEREAS,

Electoral systems are institutional frameworks that shape voter participation, candidate competition, coalition formation, and the distribution of political leverage; and

WHEREAS,

Ranked-choice voting expands voter choice, reduces structural barriers to entry for non-major party candidates, and incentivizes broader coalition-building beyond a single faction; and

WHEREAS,

Ranked-choice voting reduces the spoiler effect and allows voters to express multiple preferences rather than being limited to a single binary choice; and

WHEREAS,

Alaska has now conducted multiple statewide election cycles under this system, and voters have demonstrated the ability to adapt to its procedures; and

WHEREAS,

The repeal of 2020 campaign finance reforms would alter current disclosure and contribution rules, which are separate policy questions that should be evaluated on their own merits;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,

That the Alaska Libertarian Party supports retaining Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,

That the Alaska Libertarian Party affirms that electoral rules should prioritize voter choice, competitive access to the ballot, and broader participation rather than structural two-party consolidation; and

NOTWITHSTANDING as Libertarians we believe that it would be preferable for each party to run and pay for their own candidate selection process themselves, we do not believe this opportunity for improvement warrants a full repeal of RCV to address; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,

That the Alaska Libertarian Party opposes Initiative 24ESEG; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, That the Alaska Libertarian Party urges voters to vote NO on Initiative 24ESEG in order to retain open primaries, ranked-choice voting, and the current campaign finance framework.

Adopted by the Alaska Libertarian Party Executive Board on Feb 20, 2026.
